SPO Students Perform Alongside Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra at the Beloved Kids Proms Concert
Sunshine Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) students recently had the wonderful opportunity to perform alongside the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) as part of the much-loved Kids Proms concert series, a unique family concert experience that introduces children to the excitement of live orchestral music through storytelling, interactive performances, and engaging musical adventures.
Founded in 1971, the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Australia's leading community orchestras and has long been recognised for its commitment to musical excellence, music education, and community engagement. Under the artistic direction of Paul Terracini, KPO presents a diverse annual season of symphonic concerts, educational initiatives, composer workshops, and the prestigious NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition. The orchestra is particularly passionate about nurturing the next generation of musicians and audiences through its educational programs.
One of KPO's signature initiatives is the Kids Proms concert series, specially designed for young audiences and families. Rather than a traditional concert where audiences simply listen, Kids Proms encourages children to actively participate through singing, movement, storytelling, costumes, and interactive musical experiences. These concerts create a welcoming environment where children can discover the joy of orchestral music while developing curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Each concert explores a different creative theme, making classical music both accessible and exciting for audiences of all ages.
For our SPO students, performing as part of this production was both an honour and a valuable learning experience. Sharing the stage with experienced KPO musicians allowed our young performers to experience the discipline and artistry of a professional-style orchestral environment while contributing to a concert designed to inspire the wider community.
Beyond refining their ensemble playing, students gained first-hand experience in responding to a conductor, collaborating with musicians from another orchestra, and engaging with audiences in a lively and interactive concert setting. They learned that music is not only about technical performance, but also about communication, storytelling, and creating meaningful connections with listeners.
The enthusiastic participation of the children in the audience and the warm support from families created a joyful atmosphere throughout the concert. Seeing young audience members laugh, sing, move with the music, and experience a live orchestra up close reminded our students of the positive impact that music can have on the community.
Sunshine Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to have partnered with Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra for this inspiring event. Opportunities like Kids Proms provide our students with invaluable performance experience while reinforcing the importance of collaboration, community engagement, and sharing the joy of music with audiences of all ages.
We sincerely thank the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra for welcoming our students to this wonderful production and look forward to many more opportunities to perform together in the future.
